North River
Newell's Road · North River, Newfoundland & Labrador
made for slow mornings
and unhurried days.
We built North River as a place to breathe — where the sound of moving water stays with you all day and the light through the trees does the rest. We hope you feel that from the moment you arrive.
Thoughtfully designed,
quietly luxurious.
The house sits at the end of Newell's Road, where the land meets the North River — an unscheduled Atlantic salmon river that flows directly past the property. Inside, the aesthetic is Scandinavian in spirit: dark board-and-batten walls, vaulted white ceilings, a statement wood-burning fireplace, and a kitchen stocked with SMEG appliances and everything you need to cook well.
Outside, the property opens onto a private pool and hot tub, a wood-fired pizza oven, a propane fire table and BBQ, and direct access to the river — where kayaks and life vests are ready for your use. The greenhouse holds the outdoor cushions, and the long quiet driveway ensures the place feels entirely your own.
This is a space that rewards slowness. We hope you settle in fully.

Amenities
North River is stocked and ready for a full, comfortable stay — whether you're cooking a long dinner, floating on the river, or simply watching the fire as the evening settles in.
Kayaks and life vests are provided and ready to use. The North River is an unscheduled Atlantic salmon river — a rare and beautiful thing to have right outside your door. Whether you paddle upstream, drift through the shallows, or simply sit at the bank and watch the current move, it's one of the most peaceful parts of the stay.
Both are yours to enjoy freely. Please review the pool guidelines in the House Rules tab before use — in particular the no-glass policy. Cushions for the outdoor furniture are stored in the greenhouse; please bring them in during inclement weather and return them before you check out.
The propane BBQ and fire table are ready for use. Please note that we cannot guarantee the tanks will be full on arrival — if you plan to use them, we recommend filling up at the local convenience store at the mouth of the river in Clark's Beach.
The kitchen is fully equipped for serious cooking. The granite peninsula is the ideal surface for stretching pizza dough — it's where we've made hundreds of pizzas ourselves. The stand mixer is in the pantry if you'd like to use it.
Wood-Fired
Pizza Oven
Few things bring a stay at North River together quite like an evening around the pizza oven. Take your time with it — the process is part of the pleasure. Below is everything you need to do it beautifully.
Gather your dry wood bundle, matches, pizza peel, pizza stone, and your ingredients. Start the oven before you begin your dough — it needs time to come to temperature while the dough rests.
Light a fire in the centre of the oven and allow it to burn for up to an hour, until the walls glow with heat and the flames settle into glowing coals.
Use the metal rake to push the coals to one side of the oven, creating a clear, hot surface on the opposite side for the pizza.
Mix your ingredients and knead by hand, or use the stand mixer in the pantry. Cover and allow the dough to rest for at least 2 hours.
Stretch the dough on a lightly floured surface — the granite peninsula is ideal. Add sauce, cheese, and toppings. Restraint is your friend here: less topping means a crispier, more even result.
Lightly flour the pizza peel. With a confident, quick motion, slide it under the pizza and transfer to the oven floor.
After one minute, turn the pizza slowly to prevent sticking. Position it close to the flame without letting it burn — finding the sweet spot is part of the experience.
Continue rotating for even colour on all sides. For a golden top, hold the pizza near the oven roof for a minute before removing. Total cook time is typically 90 seconds to 5 minutes depending on heat. Transfer to the pizza stone for cutting.
Please do not use water or any cleaning products inside the oven — this can permanently damage the oven floor and walls.
Explore
North River sits in one of the most quietly remarkable corners of the Avalon Peninsula — close enough to centuries of history and good food, far enough from everything else to feel entirely removed from it.
The North River is an unscheduled salmon river — flowing freely right past the property, with no licence required to fish it (catch-and-release only). Atlantic salmon are among the most prized fish in the world, and having one of their rivers in the backyard is a rare and special thing. Kayaks and life vests are available; launch from the property and paddle at your own pace. The water is clear and cold, and in season you may well spot salmon resting in the shallows.
Brigus
One of Newfoundland's most beautiful historic towns — a sheltered harbour ringed by stone walls, narrow winding lanes, and heritage homes. Visit Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site (home of legendary ice navigator Captain Bob Bartlett), walk the mysterious Tunnel carved through solid rock, and linger over lunch at one of the cafés. Brigus blueberries are a local legend — don't leave without trying them.
Cupids
The site of the first English settlement in Canada, founded in 1610. The Cupids Legacy Centre houses over 170,000 artifacts and tells the story of the colony through exhibits and guided tours. In summer, archaeologists are still actively uncovering the original plantation — a living piece of North American history on your doorstep.
Manuels River
The shale beds along Manuels River contain trilobite fossils over 500 million years old — instrumental in establishing the theory of continental drift. Guided nature tours, hiking trails, a café, and an interpretive centre make for a fascinating half-day outing.
Ocean Quest Adventures
Whale and iceberg tours, sea kayaking, scuba diving, and fishing trips on Conception Bay. Humpback whales are regularly spotted in these waters, and in spring, icebergs drift south through the bay — a uniquely Newfoundland experience.
Harbour Grace
A town steeped in pirate lore and early aviation history — where Amelia Earhart began her solo transatlantic flight. The Conception Bay Museum, housed in an 1870 customs building, brings the area's extraordinary maritime past to life.
St. John's
One of the oldest cities in North America. Wander the colourful Jellybean Row houses, hike Signal Hill for views over the North Atlantic, and spend an evening exploring the restaurants and music venues downtown. St. John's rewards a full day easily.
The North River is unscheduled, meaning retention of salmon is not permitted — catch-and-release only, with a limit of three fish per day. A valid inland fishery licence is required. Non-residents of Newfoundland and Labrador must fish with a licensed guide. For current regulations, visit dfo-mpo.gc.ca.
